Why does $scope have a ($) in front of it?

By convention, all variables that are supplied by the Angular framework begin with a '$' for a prefix. When you include variables when defining an Angular component, like a controller, service, etc., Angular will scan the list of arguments for variables beginning with '$' and inject the correct objects from the framework so you can access them (called dependency injection).

The $ symbol means scope in programming.
