Why does the property ruby need to be a pointer?

In the code challenge the line "property(nonatomic, strong) Ruby *ruby;" comes up, but why does *ruby have to be a pointer? The only difference is that ruby can point to a memory address, right? Thanks!

ruby needs to be a pointer because ruby is an object. All objects in objective c are pointers.
