Why doesn't letter have to be defined?

At and before 2:23 in this video, there is a code entered into the java-repl: for (char letter : example.toCharArray()){ System.out.println("We have the letter " + letter); }

Why doesn't letter have to be defined? Is it a name built into java?

It is declared and initialized in the for loop.
