why inline block instead of inline?

after he floats the main nav he gives the li display inline block. why doesn't inline work?

List items are block by default. The "inline-block" setting allows the to be on the same line.

A setting of "inline" would also allow that, but it would not retain other "block" properties such as being adjustable in size.
