Why is margin auto having that effect on flex items?

I don't understand why is it happening that way. Why browser interprets it that way? Can it be used regardless of justify content property?

The special function of the auto value of margins is built-in to the flexbox mechaniism.

And yes, using an auto margin on an item will override the setting of justify-content in that flex container.
