Yes, when using:

int textLength = sampleText.length();

You can't do:

int textLength = length();

As, you're not telling Java what length textLength is equal to.

However, you can do:

int textLength = sampleText.length();

As then, you're saying that it's equal to the length of sampleText. In other words, you must define which variable you are getting the length of in Java.
