Why would you use List<?> myList = new ArrayList<?>()

Instead of

  ArrayList<?> myList = new ArrayList<?>();

I thought List<> was an interface and ArrayList<> was within the interface? Could you explain it to me in ELI5(explain like i'm five) style please?

Thank you

Well it was mentioned in the tutorial that by declaring your object with the List<E> interface you could change that object into another implementation of the List<E> interface; say the LinkedList class instead of ArrayList.
