Will short-codes slow down my site?

I've heard that shortcodes slow down your website and was wondering if some of the information on this course is outdated. Shortcodes should be avoided, right?

It's best practice to limit the usage of shortcodes. When you for example decide to change your theme in the future, you would have to make sure all shortcodes that you have used in your posts and pages, are supported in your new theme as well.

I don't think shortcodes will necessarily slow your website down, but that really depends on the specific shortcode. What does it do? How is it coded? etc..
