Wordpress help for a beginner

Hi, I am really having trouble with the Wordpress course, mostly because I am such a beginner to any kind of programming. I have successfully done the 1 Click Install. I was attempting to practice with the Famous 5 Minute Install, however, I really can't grasp the FileZilla software. I've downloaded FileZilla, I've gone to Wordpress.org and installed Wordpress, I've entered my host, username, and password into FileZilla... and then??? I don't know where to find files or wordpress in FileZilla, I'm not finding a wordpress file anywhere, and I wouldn't even know what to do?? I would skip this and move on, but I know FileZilla is used later in the course (creating custom changes, etc) so I should really learn this NOW before moving on any further. Thank you for any help someone might have!

there was anonther one who hade the same problem. filezilla is just a program to transfer files. you have to upload the wordpressfiles to a catalog. it can be a public_html folder. try look for that folder.

Hi Jennifer,

If you are on a Mac use Fetch. Fetch's interface blows FileZilla away. I find that it's easier for beginners. If we're allowed to share our Skype usernames on here I'd be more than happy to help you learn how to do manual installs.

Does anyone know if we're allowed?

Thanks

Stef

I'm on a PC. I really do not understand what to do. I found a wordpress folder on my PC through FileZilla, but then again, from the video, I have no idea what Zac did to start downloading. I panicked that my entire PC contents were downloading to FileZilla because some kind of file transfer started automatically so I cancelled it and exited FileZilla.

I thought these were appropriate for true beginners. I am very good with using computers and software as a casual user and wanted to learn more about programming, but I already feel like I am in way over my head just with this basic course. :-/

Got it. So, the thing with FileZilla is getting comfy with the interface. Wish I could post an image/screenshot on here. Basically you need to understand what frames are what. Are you even able to login to your FTP?

Do you mean logging in, as bringing up my domain and logging in with my CPanel username and password? Yes, I was able to do that.

Ok great.

My site is already up and running through the 1 Click Install. Zac recommended trying both installs for practice, plus I know FileZilla is used later in the course (I've watched more of the videos, but was trying to catch up on the practical application through my site). This is where I got stuck, was the FileZilla and really grasping what the heck is even going on!!!

I understand. Don't let it overwhelm you though. It truly is FileZilla's fault. It's a 1995 interface and doesn't offer a drag and drop experience if I remember correctly.

You just need to keep an eye on the SITE LOCAL and SITE DISTANT. If those are still part of FileZilla. SITE LOCAL being your computer and SITE DISTANT being the FTP/SERVER. Make sense?

So say all the WordPress files you would see under SITE LOCAL on the left. You would highlight and grab the ones you want to throw into SITE DISTANT. If I had a folder on the server under SITE DISTANT called DEV I'd highlight what I needed in SITE LOCAL and drag or throw into that folder under SITE DISTANT.

It's been a few years so I apologize if those 2 terms aren't on the interface anymore. But that in a nutshell is how you would add the WP files to the FTP in order to learn and do a manual install.

Host though have made it easier now for the one click install and you can choose the directory or even create it now with those one click installs.

Ah I see. I haven't seen the course and most likely won't but each Developer has their own way of editing files. So if you're going to be editing, some download the file locally, edit it and then re-upload it. I choose to work from the server myself, although this is dangerous I like to live on the edge. I'll often download the file I'm going to work on, keep it safe in a folder on my desktop and then edit it live on the server so I can see instant changes.

Heck I may even see what Zac is teaching now that you've peaked my interest.

If you get stuck let me know.

Ok: I have LOCAL SITE on the left hand side, and REMOTE SITE on the right. If I am understanding you correctly: The local sites are accessing my PC folders. The Remote Site will be when I am logged into my domain through the CPanel log in (It's logged out right now because I panicked). So with that knowledge, I am supposed to drag everything from the Wordpress file on the LOCAL SITE, and drop it into the Public-Html folder on the REMOTE SITE??

Exactly. So they call it REMOTE now ok fine. You have to make sure you're in the right directory though. If you're site is already up and you are uploading something you need to make sure not to overwrite something.

So for instance if you're site is up and it's WP then on the remote side if you are in the root of the directory you should see folders called WP-CONTENT and WP-ADMIN and WP-INCLUDE. Everything having to do with your site is inside WP CONTENT / THEMES/ NAME OF YOUR THEME. Once in there you can then work with the STYLE sheet, all the PHP files and so on.

Stef, thanks so much for helping me out. Yes, it seems that later in the course, Zac uses FileZilla to upload changes to the site.

No problem. Great. Yes you can either download to desktop and work locally, which a lot of people do for safety reasons, or you can work straight from the server by choosing the EDITOR you want FILEZILLA to open and edit with. I work too fast to download and then re-upload. So I work from the server. I know, it's dangerous but oh well.

Also, I am still a bit confused on the whole point of uploading all these files through FileZilla....where do the files go? Are they stored on my wordpress site?

OK: since my site is actually up and running, should I NOT upload these files now? Should I wait until I am changing some files (as will be done in later vidoes)?

Depends what you're uploading really. You said your site was already up. What files are you trying to upload to your site?

Exactly. Don't upload anything because you may be overriding something. I'm just not sure what you're uploading and what you're attempting to do. So it's hard to advise.

Sorry for the responses on here being all over. I'm new to Treehouse.

I am new to Treehouse also (obviously!!) I appreciate all of your help so far.

There are not any files I need to upload. I was just going on Zac's suggestion to practice both installs for Wordpress (1 Click and Famous 5 Minute). So I'm okay waiting to learn how to do until when I actually need to upload files. I didn't think it would be so overwhelming!!

I'd like to see the 5 min one. Sounds like one that I've seen on the web before. Typically an upload of all core files takes 10 mins, depending on server connections/speed. I had written clear instructions to do a manual but then my darn mouse swiped the screen and deleted it all. I was so bummed. ugh.

Once you get a grasp of it all you'll be doing it in no time.

Like I said though most hosts now allow for multiple installs whereas before they didn't. Some you are limited on the amount of Databases you can have installed and so there are limitations.

One of the main reasons we do manual installs is to customize a few items for security purposes. Like adding a custom wp_ prefix to the prefix. So hackers can't play with things. All advance stuff.

Thank you Stef. I really am motivated to learn, just hope I can get through all the overwhelming stuff!
