I am trying to connect my cell phone so that I am able to use it for testing apps in Xcode. I have tried multiple ways of doing this and have had no luck. Could you please tell me how to do this?

Do you have a developer account? If not there is no way. If you do, there is very clear documentation with pictures and everything in the developer center.

Have you tried to generate out a IPA and install it via iTunes?

I do not have a developer account. I am following the building a self-destructing iPhone messaging tutorial and just wondered how they did it on the video? Is that only done through a developer account?

Sadly with iOS, you must have a developer account (you don't need an account for Android). We cover this in the Build a Crystal Ball App project.
