You do not use GROUP BY with DISTINCT.

SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT <column>) FROM <table>;

To count aggregated rows with common values use the GROUP BY keywords: SELECT COUNT(<column>) FROM <table> GROUP BY <column with common value>;
