We will now take the criteria you created
and
0:00
transform them into participant screening
questions.
0:03
So access the worksheet doc,
0:07
find the list of participant criteria you
created, and let's start.
0:09
The funny thing about people is that if
you ask if they want to participate in
0:15
your research, most of them will say yes.
0:19
Some will even twist reality a little bit
to participate.
0:22
Yes, of course, I have a smartphone,
they'll tell you.
0:26
Even if they only plan to buy one next
year.
0:29
Generally speaking, people are happy to
help,
0:32
especially when you pay to participate.
0:35
But you don't need people who just want
to,
0:39
you want people who qualify to
participate.
0:42
To find out if people qualify to
participate in your research, you will
0:46
first transform the criteria you already
identified into measurable benchmarks.
0:50
For example, a criterion such as uses
Facebook becomes measurable when
0:56
you turn it into this benchmark, posts on
Facebook at least once a week.
1:02
And the way from this benchmark to
phrasing a screening question is easy.
1:08
To avoid leading people, or revealing the
answer you're looking for,
1:12
you should hide and mask what you're
looking for.
1:17
Rather than, do you post on Facebook at
least once a week or even, how often do
1:20
you post on Facebook, ask how often do you
post something on the following websites?
1:25
And list a few options including Facebook.
1:32
If a person chooses the right answer,
they're in.
1:35
If not, they're out.
1:38
So here's what you'll do next.
1:41
Access our famous worksheet doc.
1:43
And fill in the three column table under
section two,
1:45
from criteria to screening questions.
1:49
On the first column, list the criteria you
already identified.
1:52
On the second column, transform each
criterion into a measurable benchmark.
1:57
Then on the last column, translate the
benchmark into a screening question.
2:03
Here is how I would do it for my dancing
apps criteria.
2:09
So the first criterion is uses Facebook.
2:13
We just went over it, so I'm going to jump
over to the second one, resides in the US.
2:15
So my criteria benchmark would be USA and
2:20
the screening question would be what is
your country of residence.
2:26
Again, I'm not going to ask, do you live
in the USA.
2:30
Third one is has a smart phone.
2:35
My benchmark is owns a smartphone and uses
it as a primary mobile device.
2:37
So my question would be, which of the
following do you use as your primary,
2:43
personal mobile phone.
2:49
Next one is wants to learn how to dance.
2:52
So the benchmark is has an interest in
learning how to dance.
2:55
Has made at least one inquiry with a
dancing school in the past month.
2:59
So the question would be in the past
month, what did you want to learn.
3:05
And another question, you can have two
questions per benchmark.
3:11
Thinking about the last 30 days,
3:15
how many inquiries have you made with
schools that teach the following skills?
3:18
You get the idea.
