August (and beyond) Roadmap --a bit about the rate of content/course at TeamTreehouse..

Hi TeamTreehouse course content creators. :)

It's kind of hard to tell

(because no one at Treehouse goes out of the way to date when courses are released),

but looking through my notifications page:

http://teamtreehouse.com/notifications?page=2

I seem to see that the last full course to come out (not just a workshop) was back in July.

I was the this one:

http://teamtreehouse.com/library/custom-menu-development-in-wordpress

So thanks for giving me a summer vacation TeamTreehouse!

...and hopefully the TeamTreehouse people in Portland are enjoying theirs...

maybe some of them are even at The TechFestNW today (where I'll be going):

http://techfestnw.com/

With that said I'm really hoping that the courses that are on the Roadmap for August 2015 come out soon:

https://teamtreehouse.com/roadmap

It usually only takes me a couple of hours per course, so all of the promised August courses will probably take me less than 1/2 a week (a few days).

At which point I will have to wait several more weeks for the Sept courses to come out.

Of course right now they don't even have any courses for October!

So what's the point of this forum thread post?

It's this:

Is there any way to increase the rate at which courses are released by

AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_magnitude

If you read through the above linked Wikipedia article you know I'm not talking about

doubling but at least a 10 times increase in the rate of course creation!!!!!

What's the "secret" to making this happen?

Well, hiring more people would probably help.

....

I don't know how this fits with the Treehouse business model, but

don't forget other paid online course vendors

like Lynda (http://www.lynda.com/) are "nipping at your heels"

when it comes to competition for "owning" the subscription courses "space".

Then there are all the MOOC (Massive Online Open Courses).

Yes little known institutions of higher learning

(like Stanford, Berkeley, Harvard and MIT) offer free courses as well.

The other thing that would help is automation.

I don't know what level of automation exists already for course creation

but it obviously isn't enough!

I've notice a least a few courses have been released without transcript files.

This makes them less "social media" (and SEO/SEM) "unfriendly".

Perhaps this is a good point to start having better (more automated) content utilities

I would also ask to what extent has TeamTreehouse has considered making their

product/sevice more "RDF friendly"?

What am I talking about?

Web 3.0 - The Semantic Web:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_Web

http://www.w3.org/standards/semanticweb/

Consider this - the TeamTreehouse site (and it's content) will be "fodder" for

future historians.

It is an archaeological relic in the making!

I'm sure the TeamTreehouse people don't sit around and discuss this, but it's true.

It's a small slice of "reality" of what life (including online life) was in the early

twenty-first century.

Computers (and the Internet) are the "memory bank" of our civilization,

http://en.memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Memory_bank

..just like books were at the turn of the last century and earlier.

We have reached a turning point as a civilization in that it is now

possible to document EVERYTHING, not just with text and still images, but with video

(soon, perhaps, with 360 degree augmented reality VR-capable video streams)

There is a Portland Oregon company which had a booth at the TechFestNW

which is developing production capabilities to do just that:

http://360labs.net/

Thus all information produced today has the potential to exist for many millennia going forward.

However, in the future, with continued advances in A.I., it will be computers who continually scan

(and perhaps one day, curate) mankind's vast archive of information.

So any content creators today should have in the back of their mind

the concept that it will be A.I. constructs reading (and serving up)

the content of our century in the future, thus content should not only be

directly accessible by humans but "computer-accessible-friendly" as well.

This means transcripts for video (and other forms of "metadata") are important for content.

It's exciting stuff.

Is TeamTreehouse going to have VR oriented content in the future,

perhaps when the rumored vaporware known as "Oculus Rift" is released:

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/buying-advice/gadget/oculus-rift-release-date-specs-features-hands-on-3522990/

http://venturebeat.com/2015/08/20/oculus-will-release-the-update-for-its-development-kit-next-week/

Things move fast in the tech world --TeamTreehouse needs

to move faster (and develop better/faster content creations tools).

That's all (I guess) I'm really saying --get/keep that sense of urgency.

Oh --and of course you can tell if I have time to write this thread

I'm really really bored (and have wwwaaaaaayyyy too much time on my hands).

If only my 61,292 points (and 806 badges) could do something (anything) to get me a job:

Hey James!

Interesting ideas.

On the topic of trying to get a job and looking for stuff to do with your spare time... I took a look at your profile that you linked to - it's very sparse. Lots of points and badges, little content. It's great that you've consumed everything there is to consume on the Treehouse website, but if you're trying to woo potential employers, you need to create, not just consume. If you are creating, you're doing yourself a huge disservice by not highlighting projects you've worked on in your profile.

Just my 2 cents!

Best of luck,

Greg

Please Treehouse! Adress this, what happened with your Trello suggestion? How come some new teachers just disappear? What are your plans about the outdated courses?

Argh - our course and workshop notification system was broken, then fixed, then broken again. It's currently being fixed again. It definitely looks like we haven't done much if you only go by that. We're still sending emails and showing new stuff in the library, but here's a list of everything we've released since August 5th.

Courses:

Workshops:

We have a lot more in the queue that needs to be added to the public roadmap, including new courses from all our new teachers. Trust us - we're just as anxious as you to get it out and stay current! We're also working on known issues with existing content (fixes or refreshes) to continue to make Treehouse the easiest, best, and most up-to-date place to start a career in tech.

Oh, and here are all those Trello boards Kevin mentioned:

New ones!

  • C#/.NET
  • Game Development - Trello board coming soon

Nice! Happy to see C# in there. I see lots of .NET jobs floating around out there, and haven't found any decent learning resources.

We're thrilled to be adding C#! Look for updates from new teacher Jeremy McLain soon! We'll add C# Basics to the roadmap very soon. It also pairs nicely with the new Game Development content we just started. :)
