How can I improve my typing skills?

I been typing for a better part of a month and I'm starting to get a discomfort in my right middle and ring fingers. I'm looking for a free tool to improve my code typing skills.

Honestly, the best way to get better is by starting a project and seeing it through until the very end, then picking another one and doing it again.

However, since you specifically said 'typing' try typing.io .

If you're getting discomfort, you need to change how you type. Make sure you're not resting your wrists on the table. Make sure to take breaks and stretch your fingers and wrists. Even though this site looks a little spammy, it has good advice.

Typing more won't make it hurt less.

I agree with Kenneth Love

If you're having pain while typing that's a bad sign. It could be due to bad posture, poorly setup workspace, or poor typing habits. The page Kenneth points to has some good advice. I suffer from repetitive stress injury (RSI) problems. I've completely changed my workstation to help. I use a

I'm not saying these will work for you, but this has helped me out a lot. It's important to take work breaks, stretch your fingers, wrists and arms. Don't try to work THROUGH the pain, that won't help and usually makes things worse.

RSI can be a problem, so you want to make sure you're not hurting your hands. Any job that has you in front of a computer (in the UK at least) should have you do training on how to set-up a keyboard and mouse layout (it sounds silly, but posture problems can be deteriorating when you're older.

If you're wanting to improve your typing speed, then take a look at touch-typing courses. They should be fairly easy to find.

A simple wrist rest like this has worked wonders for me.

And I also have to second the recommendation for typing.io - I've become much faster and more accurate by typing the open source code extracts on the site.
