What do i do if it asks for a kernel appropriate for an i686 cpu

when i start running ubuntu it says to get a kernel apprpriate for an i686 cpu

i686 means that you're using 32 bit OS.

My guess is you either are using a computer with a 32 bit OS or when you created the virtual machine you selected 32 bit instead of 64 bit.

That sounds right, while you could run a x86 virtual machine on a x64 OS it won't work the other way around.

To those that are also experiencing this issue,

You will probably need to enable virtualization in your system BIOS. I recommend that you research more about this for your particular motherboard.

Some Windows OS 8.0 & 10+ may need to disable the Windows OS, Hyper-V service as well. Again, I recommend that you research more on this topic per your system installation.
