When do you send client the Brand Strategy document?

Hi Matt,

Thanks for these videos, I thought you did a great job of de-mystifying the whole brand identity development process.

To anyone who might be reading... I'm wondering, when do you hand over the Brand Strategy document? Is this used to essentially woo the client? Is this at the end of that 1-2 week period, and then you wait to hear if the client wants to move forward? Or, is the Brand Strategy document created after the contract has been signed?

You would never hand over any project deliverables to a client without a contract. It is up to you how much work you are prepared to do in order to win a client though, which would normally vary based on the size of the contract available. However, branding would most probably only be an element of the entire piece of work, so a brand strategy document would be going a bit far if you were still trying to win a client.

I think the Brand Strategy document can be used as much as a presentation tool as a private roadmap for your team. We tend to tear it up and pin it against boards to iterate on all the different concepts. Once we feel confident on a deliverable, we usually send a digestible piece of content, if necessary.

Clients, especially new clients, put their trust in you, so I think that keeping communication channels open to inform on major relevant development milestones is essential. Feel free to tease them with a sneak preview, but remember to sign off on major work before undertaking it.
