Proper networking happens offline as well as online. Make sure you get off your computer and meet people at different events, and your network will grow by leaps and bounds.
-
0:00
This is a course about blogging. About writing from your computer.
-
0:03
And now, I'm going to tell you to get off it, to get outside, and to meet other people.
-
0:07
It is one of the crucial parts about getting new business.
-
0:10
We all hear about networking. Building your network.
-
0:13
And this isn't just about LinkedIn while that's important.
-
0:16
I want you to start thinking about relationships.
-
0:19
When you go out to that event and when you go out to that social gathering,
-
0:23
you want to meet as many people as possible
-
0:25
but don't just go out there and start, you know, throwing your business card around.
-
0:28
Actually make relationships with the people. Talk to them. Listen to them.
-
0:33
Hear what they have to say. You're going to go a long way if you listen to them.
-
0:36
Because they're going to remember you were that guy or girl who listened to them
-
0:39
rather than saying, "Hey, look at me! I'm doing all these great stuff."
-
0:41
I also would like to talk about the fact of thinking about
-
0:44
the different types of events you can go to.
-
0:46
Different? I call them beer and coffee events.
-
0:49
A coffee event is somewhere where you go maybe one on one.
-
0:51
You call up someone and say, "Hey, can we grab coffee?"
-
0:54
There's no set agenda. You're just building those relationships.
-
0:57
Maybe it's a followup to just someone you met at a bigger event.
-
1:00
The beer events as I'd like to call them are larger social gatherings.
-
1:04
It's not really intimate. There's a lot of people. It's usually louder and more going on.
-
1:08
It's harder to actually network close with somebody.
-
1:11
But you're going to meet a lot of different people and it's good to get out there
-
1:13
and hand that business card out and meet different people.
-
1:16
So the critical thing is, while technology enables us to connect with people around the world
-
1:21
from our computers, you must get away from the computer
-
1:24
and actually meet people face to face.
-
1:27
I always joked about how handshakes and hugs will trump shares and likes.
-
1:31
Keep that in mind. You're going to build this audience who are going to read your blog.
-
1:35
But the more you can meet these people face to face,
-
1:38
the better success you're going to have by getting business from your blog.
-
1:42
Get off the computer. Meet those people.
