It’s easy to get caught up in the notion that design thinking is about method. But really, it’s all about your mindset.

We will be going over design thinking
methods throughout this course.
0:00
However, methods are only
a small part of design thinking.
0:03
The methods you'll see,
like empathy maps or user journeys,
0:08
will serve as tools to give us better
insight into our user's needs.
0:12
So they're extremely
important to the process but,
0:18
just like with any tool,
the intent behind their use is important.
0:21
While it may sound redundant, you'll
hear me remind you throughout the course
0:26
that everything that we are doing
is in service of our user.
0:30
And the most important thing I can
remind you of is, you are not your user.
0:34
You may share traits with your user, but
0:41
it's up to you as a design thinker to try
hardest to separate your own biases and
0:43
assumptions from the process and
learn what your user truly needs.
0:48
That takes us to the importance of
assumptions as a mind set in the process.
0:53
Assumptions in and
of themselves are not bad.
0:58
It's only when we do not acknowledge
that we are assuming, or
1:01
test those assumptions, that we see
problems occur in design thinking.
1:05
Your goal throughout this course
should be to recognize your biases
1:10
as often as you can.
1:14
Remind yourself to use empathy
to keep your ego in check.
1:16
Because sometimes in the creative process,
we become attached to certain
1:19
solutions that we are excited about but
that don't truly address our user's needs.
1:25
Stay humble here and
put that idea to the side.
1:32
It's not the only idea you'll
ever have and, likely,
1:35
you'll come up with a far more impactful
one if you stay open to serving your user.
1:38
And stay compassionate with
yourself in your process.
1:44
You won't always get
the answer right away.
1:47
Design thinking takes a significant
amount of critical thinking.
1:50
However, once you see
the appreciation in a user's eyes
1:53
after their experience has been improved,
you'll know you've made the right choices.
1:57
See you in the next video.
