CSS

Question for Web Designers

Hi All,

This is a question aimed at the web designers:

I have recently completed the HTML\CSS track and understand alot of it. I have created a few little websites that I am happy with, However I am now ready to start adding backround images and some advanced css styling.

I have recently viewed a few tutorials online about creating websites using Photoshop and then importing them into dreamweaver. I wanted to ask the question, do All website designers take this method when creating websites ?

Hi, im not a web designer, but if ud read treehouse blogs and watched some more CSS tutorials, you will gain more knowledge combined.

Not all designers do that. For example Nick Pettit, he uses a software so layout his webisite. Its basically a software that hs handrawn stuff and you can lay it down and quickly adjust it.

Some still do that.

But if you are creating graphics for web, i think u want to use illustrator as thats going to take over photoshop in web . Theres a tutoral about this at treehouse as well. And if u are creating a app ud want to use illustrator, vestor graphics. Same for web, unless yo have real images.

Hope it helps!

I wouldn't say that Photoshop design is dead, it remains a key part of how I do my work.

After wire framing and Photoshop I've gotten far more used to utilising the browser dweveopment tools to test design and functionality. With Chrome Dev Tools for example, I can type some CSS on the fly and watch how it affects the page in real time and then add it to the CSS file to save the changes.

By all means though keep using Photoshop and/or Illustrator, whatever is comfortable for you. :-)

Well, there are many different ways. Like the way how Nick does it, the way how you do it, whatever is right for you .

But if you want to make graphics, you should probably do it with illustrator, vector , since if you scale it from a mobile version to a 27inch imac, the image would be blured if in photoshop.

I wouldn't say using photoshop to create a website and import it into dreamweaver is a widely used practice anymore. However photoshop is still a strong tool to use.

I typically wireframe by pen first, than wireframe in Illustrator or Sketch, and go back and forth between working in the browser and working in Illustrator, Photoshop, and Sketch.

And Konrad Pilch, I respectfully disagree that Illustrator is going to take over Photoshop web. There are things both can't do well, that the other one can. Adobe has purposefully kept both unique to it's strengths. New kids like Sketch are trying to blend Illustrator and Photoshop by offering both raster and vector drawing tools in one. Fireworks had that, but nobody used it for whatever reason.

If you've ever tried to create gradients, or other high fidely non-vector based assets, you know Illustrator sucks at that. However, icons, logos, etc should be vector, yes I agree.

But what about that flat, trendy, mulit-gradient button for your website? Which will give you better results? Photoshop will, hands down.

Neither Photoshop or illustrator are going anywhere in the web design world, because both have glaring weaknesses the other one covers.

In regard to your links, those are specifically relating to PSD to HTML, which is what Kamal mentioned about the tutorials on going PSD to dreamweaver, and so i that case you're right, and they are relevant articles to that question. But I caution you against making such blanket statements such as photoshop is going to take over illustrator in web. That's simply not true. Sketch might take over both though, haha. Especially somebody who is just trying to figure it all out. We don't want to turn someone away at an early state from a perfectly valid and useful tool. Photoshop as a tool is valid, photoshop as a technique is not.

Anyway, that's my 3.5 cents.

Yes, i agree with you, but i worote ' And if u are creating a app ud want to use illustrator, vestor graphics. Same for web, unless yo have real images. ' so that makes the point im more about. Saying photoshop is dead, or fading, im more likely saying it as its not vestor graphics thats all. It will still be widely used, but for different purpose. I believe that the parallax websites are made iwht illustrator but it coulv be made with photoshop. Im not an exper in neather of those.

This is must WATCH and skip to 01:55 minute. If you watch more about it, hed talk more about it .

But i like to do it like you Kevin. Wireframe by pen, and then prototype it in the web . As i get better and get more software id do the same things as you do . Nick does the same . But i cnat find the video where he talks about it , unless it was a pro and i dont have it now.

And my the fact what i said, is that i watched Matt in a video talkng about this, but it was a time ago so i might nor remember it too well. Treehouse looks to me to use like all vestor. It depends what site you are building then ud might use different adobe.

Heres a discussion about some design on web .

Here is Matt, just watch the first few seconds or min.

But anyways, both are for different things. If you are going to worth with images, then u cant replace photoshop, if you are going to work with vestro such as icons then u wont replace illustrator. Or whatever , because both can do pretty much the same think i think, but in thier way.
