Drawing inspiration from images of space we finish creating the assets of our scene by creating the planets for the background.
-
0:00
Next, we'll create our background, we don't
-
0:02
just want it to be black, that's boring.
-
0:05
If you Google images of space, you'll see a lot of
-
0:07
images with some pretty cool colors and that's what we wanna mimic.
-
0:10
So, let's create a new layer for our
-
0:12
background beneath the ground layer, named BG colors.
-
0:20
Now, create a black rectangle with the Rectangle tool, as big as the artboard.
-
0:25
Click anywhere on the artboard to get the Rectangle panel.
-
0:29
We want it to be a 568 by 320, cuz that's how big our artboard is.
-
0:33
Now, change it to black.
-
0:35
And align it to the artboard, with the Alignment tools.
-
0:40
Next, duplicate that rectangle, and make its fill a gradient.
-
0:44
You can make an object's fill a gradient by using the greater
-
0:47
than symbol on your keyboard, or just by selecting it from the toolbar.
-
0:51
Choose a deep purple, or maroon color for one of the swatches.
-
0:55
And the other swatch, a deep black.
-
1:08
Next, make it a radial gradient and lower the opacity to 70%.
-
1:14
We want the lighter color in the middle so we're going to reverse the gradient.
-
1:17
[BLANK_AUDIO].
-
1:21
You can edit the size of your gradient by hitting G on your keyboard.
-
1:24
Or selecting the Gradient tool from the toolbar.
-
1:27
[BLANK_AUDIO].
-
1:31
That's looking pretty great.
-
1:32
Lets add some small stars with the Pencil
-
1:35
tool trick you learned from the ground layer.
-
1:37
Create a new layer called atmosphere.
-
1:44
Just scribble a bit now, like we did on the ground.
-
1:47
Select your
-
1:52
Pencil tool.
-
1:58
Set the stroke color to a gradient, let's make it a blue going to white.
-
2:02
[BLANK_AUDIO].
-
2:12
Make sure you change the gradient type to linear.
-
2:15
Set the stroke width to 0.25 pixels and make sure it's dashed.
-
2:24
Your settings from before should already be in the dash blind fields.
-
2:29
Next, let's set a variable with brush stroke.
-
2:33
This will just give a little variance in size for our stars.
-
2:37
Now, let's duplicate this layer and flip it over to create some more stars.
-
2:43
But let's change this stroke to one pixel.
-
2:47
This gives a little depth to our scene.
-
2:49
We've got bigger stars up front and smaller start in the back.
-
2:53
That's looking pretty good, but let's add one more atmospheric effect.
-
2:56
We're going to create a layer than I'm going to call
-
2:58
stardust and do the same basic trick with the Pencil tool.
-
3:00
[BLANK_AUDIO].
-
3:10
Let's just make the stroke blue, instead of a gradient color.
-
3:12
[BLANK_AUDIO].
-
3:16
And let's set the stroke to 30 pixels.
-
3:21
Make sure you turn the dashed line off.
-
3:25
Next, we're going to go up to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
-
3:31
And set the radius to 30 pixels.
-
3:34
You can see it gives our stroke a feathered effect.
-
3:37
Now, I'm going to lower the opacity to 30%.
-
3:42
And change its blend mode in the Transparency panel to hard light.
-
3:48
You can always adjust this path if you don't like your result.
-
3:59
Now, the last touch will be some
-
4:00
bigger stars that we'll add manually with ellipses.
-
4:03
Make a couple of different colored ellipses.
-
4:05
[BLANK_AUDIO].
-
4:33
Feel free to adjust the opacity of your star dust layer.
-
4:39
You can mess with different blend modes to give different effects.
-
4:42
Something like overlay might give you a more subtle texture.
-
4:46
The last missing piece of the puzzle to our background, is our planets.
-
4:50
After you're done sketching your planets and finding some
-
4:52
colors, you might end up with something like this.
-
4:55
Feel free to rearrange the planets however you want.
-
4:58
For example, I'll move the bigger planet
-
5:00
to the bottom right and rotate it slightly.
-
5:03
That looks pretty good.
-
5:04
And that's it for our background.
-
5:06
Now, we can move on to our character graphics.
